Air Conditioner Not Cooling in Cairns
Blowing air but not cold air is a symptom with about eight likely causes.
- Every likely cause checked, not assumed
- Temperature split measured on site
- Coil, fan and electrical fault finding
- No gas added without a reason
Blowing air, just not cold air
That is a symptom, not a fault, and in this climate it has roughly eight likely causes sitting behind it. The unit that blows warm on a 33 degree February afternoon might be low on refrigerant, or it might have a coil so packed with salt scale and dust that it cannot reject heat, or a capacitor that has aged out so the compressor never starts. Those are entirely different repairs. The point of the visit is to find out which one it is before anything is replaced or recharged.
The two checks worth doing yourself
Pull the front cover on the indoor head and look at the filters. In a Cairns wet season they load up faster than most people expect, and a choked filter starves airflow across the evaporator until the coil ices and the air coming out goes weak and eventually warm. They wash under a tap.
Then check the obvious controls: the unit is in cool rather than fan or auto, the setpoint is genuinely below room temperature, and the isolator by the outdoor unit is switched on with the breaker still in. That is the whole safe list. Everything past it is either behind mains voltage or inside a sealed refrigeration circuit, and both are licensed work for good reason.
What it usually turns out to be
Airflow faults come first, because they are the most common and the cheapest to fix. Blocked filters, a barrel fan caked with the mould that grows here in weeks, an evaporator coil matted with dust, or an outdoor coil corroded by salt or clogged with cane ash so heat has nowhere to go.
Electrical faults come next. A failed run capacitor is the classic: the fan spins, the compressor hums and stalls, and the house never gets cold. Fan motors seize, contactors pit and stick, thermistors drift so the board reads a temperature that is not real, and control boards fail outright after a lightning season.
Refrigerant loss is on the list, but it is one cause among several rather than the default answer. A sealed system does not consume gas, so if the charge is low there is a leak, and adding more without finding it is money out the window.
Then there is the case where nothing is broken. An undersized unit, or one fighting a west-facing wall of glass and an uninsulated roof space, will run flat out all afternoon and never reach setpoint. So will an oversized one, in a different way, short cycling and leaving the room cold and clammy rather than cool. No repair fixes a sizing decision.
When it is not worth chasing
If the unit is old, on phased-out gas, and the fault is a leaking coil or a dead compressor, we will say so rather than string together repairs on a machine that has reached the end. The same goes for a condenser whose fins have gone to powder from years of salt air. Diagnosis still tells you where you stand, which is worth having either way. Where we work
- Babinda The wettest town in the country, where drainage and outdoor unit siting decide how long a system lasts.
- Bentley Park Small blocks and close-set houses, where the outdoor unit location decides the whole system design.
- Edge Hill Heritage Queenslanders with no wall cavity, where the pipe route is the hardest part of the job.
- Edmonton Southern corridor estates where most installs go into new slab-on-ground homes within months of handover.
- Innisfail Rebuild-era housing where the mounting standard is the whole conversation, and rainfall does the rest.
- Gordonvale Cane country, where the thing that quietly costs a system its capacity is what settles on the coil.
- Mission Beach Salt and cyclone exposure together, on properties that often sit empty between guests.
- Redlynch A valley suburb where humidity sits higher than the coast, so sizing for moisture removal matters more than raw output.
- Smithfield Heavy rental turnover near JCU, where reliability between tenants matters as much as the install itself.
- Trinity Beach Direct salt exposure off the water, where coil specification and condenser siting decide how long a system lasts.
- Tully Rainfall and humidity at the extreme end, on blocks where the supply run is often the real constraint.
Tell us what it is doing
Describe the symptom and the unit and you will get an idea of what is going on before anyone comes out.
- Hours
- Weekdays 7 until 5, Saturday mornings
- Area
- Cairns, the beaches, and south to the Cassowary Coast
- Quotes
- In writing, itemised, no obligation
- We ask what the rooms are doing before we quote a size, not after.
- The quote covers the mount, the line set, the electrical and the make good, so there are no line items appearing on install day.
- Written, itemised, and yours to compare against anyone else's.
