Getting the install right matters more than the badge on the box
Refrigerant handling and electrical work both carry licensing requirements in Queensland, and it is worth asking any installer for theirs before they open a system. We quote the whole job in writing, we test rather than assume, and we hand over the commissioning figures.
Sized for humidity, not just heat
An oversized unit cools fast, short cycles, and never pulls the moisture out. Up here that is the difference between cool and comfortable.
Mounted for cyclone country
Outdoor units in this region need bracket and fixing detail rated for the wind loads that actually apply here, not a generic bracket.
Specified for salt air
Within a few kilometres of the water, coil coating and condenser siting decide whether a unit lasts a decade or half of one.
We will tell you to repair it
If a unit is worth fixing we say so, even though a replacement is the bigger job for us.

Installation
Different homes take different systems, and the wrong choice is expensive to undo. Here is what each one suits.
-
Split System Installation
One indoor head, one outdoor unit, sized for the room rather than the sales brochure.
What the job involves -
Ducted Air Conditioning
One outdoor unit, a fan coil in the roof, and conditioned air to every room that needs it.
What the job involves -
Multi Head Split Installation
Several indoor heads on one outdoor unit, which suits some homes and not others.
What the job involves -
Air Conditioning Replacement
Swapping an old unit out properly, including the parts nobody thinks to look at.
What the job involves -
Commercial Air Conditioning
Cassette and light commercial systems sized for people, doors and outside air.
What the job involves -
Air Conditioning Servicing
A scheduled mechanical and electrical check on a unit that is still working.
What the job involves -
Air Conditioning Cleaning
Coils, barrel fan and drain pan cleaned, which is where the smell actually lives.

Cairns and the corridor south
Based in Cairns and working the coast from the northern beaches down through the cane country.
- Babinda The wettest town in the country, where drainage and outdoor unit siting decide how long a system lasts.
- Bentley Park Small blocks and close-set houses, where the outdoor unit location decides the whole system design.
- Edge Hill Heritage Queenslanders with no wall cavity, where the pipe route is the hardest part of the job.
- Edmonton Southern corridor estates where most installs go into new slab-on-ground homes within months of handover.
- Innisfail Rebuild-era housing where the mounting standard is the whole conversation, and rainfall does the rest.
- Gordonvale Cane country, where the thing that quietly costs a system its capacity is what settles on the coil.
- Mission Beach Salt and cyclone exposure together, on properties that often sit empty between guests.
- Redlynch A valley suburb where humidity sits higher than the coast, so sizing for moisture removal matters more than raw output.
- Smithfield Heavy rental turnover near JCU, where reliability between tenants matters as much as the install itself.
- Trinity Beach Direct salt exposure off the water, where coil specification and condenser siting decide how long a system lasts.
- Tully Rainfall and humidity at the extreme end, on blocks where the supply run is often the real constraint.
How an install runs
Five steps, and the fourth is the one most quotes leave out.
-
Tell us the rooms
Dimensions, orientation, ceiling height and how much glass. That is most of what sizing needs, and it can be done over the phone.
-
We quote the whole job
Equipment, mounting, pipe run, electrical and make good, in writing. No line items appearing on the day.
-
We check the supply
Older switchboards and shared circuits get found before install day, not while the wall is open.
-
Install and commission
Brazed and pressure tested, vacuumed down, gas charge verified, and drainage run and tested rather than assumed.
-
We show you the numbers
Supply and return temperatures at commissioning, so there is a baseline to compare against if anything changes later.
Why installation quality matters more here than almost anywhere
Far North Queensland is one of the hardest environments in the country for a split system, and for three reasons that have nothing to do with the brand on the box.
The first is humidity. Most of the year the job is not really cooling, it is removing moisture. A unit that is too large for the room drops the temperature quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts down before it has dehumidified anything. The room reads 24 degrees and still feels clammy. That is a sizing decision made at quote stage, and no amount of adjustment afterwards fixes it.
The second is wind. This is a cyclone region, and an outdoor unit hanging off a wall is a lump of metal with a large flat face. The bracket, the fixings and what they are fixed into all matter, and they are the part of an install nobody sees once the job is finished.
The third is salt. Within a few kilometres of the water the aluminium fins on a condenser corrode, and once the fin bonds to the copper tube the coil stops transferring heat properly. Coil coating and where the unit is placed relative to prevailing wind decide whether that takes fifteen years or five.
What we will tell you honestly
Some units are worth repairing. If yours is under about eight years old, still on a current refrigerant, and the fault is a capacitor or a fan motor, we will say so, even though a replacement would be the larger job for us.
Some are not. A system on phased-out gas with a leaking indoor coil is money spent to keep an old unit limping, and the sensible answer is to put that money toward a replacement instead.
We will also tell you when the number of heads you have in mind will not work on one outdoor unit, or when the wall you want the head on has no sensible pipe route. Better to hear that at quote stage than on install day.
There is more on sizing, cyclone mounting and running costs in our air conditioning advice, including what actually drives an installation quote. If you would rather know who you would be dealing with first, that is fair enough too.
Four things that are not negotiable
None of this is a special offer. It is how the job runs, written down so you can hold us to it.
-
The whole job, in writing
Equipment, mounting, pipe run, electrical and make good, all priced before anyone starts. Nothing appears as a line item on the day.
-
The supply checked first
Older switchboards and shared circuits get found before install day, not after the wall is already open.
-
Commissioning figures handed over
Supply and return temperatures measured on the day, so there is a baseline to compare against if anything changes later.
-
Repair advice against our own interest
If a unit is worth fixing we will say so, even though a replacement is the bigger job for us.
Common questions
Do you charge to quote?
No. Most installs can be sized and priced from room dimensions, ceiling height, and how much glass you have and which way it faces. We only need to come out when access, the switchboard, or the outdoor unit location is the actual question.
How long does an install take?
A single back-to-back split, where the indoor head sits directly opposite the outdoor unit, is usually a few hours. Anything with a long pipe run, a second storey, or electrical work is a full day. Ducted is measured in days rather than hours.
Should I just get a bigger unit to be safe?
No, and this is the most common expensive mistake up here. An oversized unit cools the room quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts down before it has removed any moisture. The thermometer reads fine and the room still feels clammy. In this climate correct sizing matters more than spare capacity.
Which brand should I buy?
Brand matters less than most people expect and less than the install does. Sizing, where the outdoor unit sits, how it is fixed, the pipe run and whether the drain actually falls will affect how the system performs far more than the badge. We will talk through options in your budget rather than pushing one make.
Is the electrical work included?
It is quoted, so there are no surprises on the day. Some homes need a dedicated circuit, and older switchboards sometimes need work before another load goes on. We check the board before quoting rather than discovering it with the wall already open.
Does living near the water change what I should install?
Yes, more than most people realise. Within a few kilometres of the coast, salt attacks the aluminium fins on the outdoor coil, and heat transfer drops off long before the unit actually fails. Coil coating and where the condenser sits relative to the prevailing south-easterly are worth getting right at install.
How often does a system need servicing here?
More often than the manual assumes, because the manual was not written for the tropics. Coastal units deal with salt, inland units deal with cane ash and dust, and everything deals with humidity that grows mould in the barrel fan. Annual is a sensible baseline, and before the wet season is the useful time.
What happens if something goes wrong after the install?
Equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty, and workmanship is on us. Most early problems are not equipment faults at all: they are drainage or airflow, both of which are install decisions. That is exactly why we test drainage rather than assume it, and hand over the commissioning figures.
