What actually counts as an emergency
A February night in Cairns where the house does not drop below 28 degrees is a genuinely hard night, particularly with a baby, someone elderly, or anyone unwell in the building. That is reason enough to call. But not every fault needs someone on the roof at nine at night, and it is worth knowing the difference before you pay for out of hours attendance.
Treat as urgent: a unit tripping the breaker repeatedly, burning smells, smoke, water running into a switchboard or across a ceiling light, or any fault in a building where losing cooling is a health risk rather than a comfort problem. Commercial cool rooms and server spaces belong in the same category. Treat as next available: a unit that is running but weak, a noisy fan, or a slow drip into a bucket. Those cost more at midnight and get no better an outcome.
What to do before anyone arrives
If the breaker is tripping, leave it off. Resetting a breaker repeatedly on a faulty circuit is how a fault becomes a fire, and the trip is the protection working. If water is coming out of the indoor head near anything electrical, switch the unit off at the isolator and put a container under it. If the unit runs but blows warm, check the filter and the mode, then leave it off rather than letting it run iced up, because a frozen coil sending liquid back to the compressor does real damage in an hour.
Open the house up where you can, run ceiling fans, and get air moving. It is not a fix but it makes the wait survivable.
What can and cannot be done after hours
Plenty of faults can be resolved on the spot. Capacitors, contactors, fuses, blocked drains, iced coils, sensor faults and control settings are all common and all fixable with what is on the van. Others cannot be finished at night. Refrigeration wholesalers are shut, so a specific fan motor, control board or compressor for your model may not be available until the next business day. When that happens the honest job is to make the system safe, get partial cooling running if that is possible, and book the part.
Nobody can promise a same night part for every unit, and anyone who does is telling you what you want to hear.
Peak season, and when to stop spending
Failures cluster hard between December and March. That is when systems run longest, when humidity loads are highest, and when every technician in the region takes the same calls in the same week. Waiting is a real possibility at that time of year, so it is worth ringing early in the day rather than after dark if the fault has been building for a while.
If the unit turns out to be old, on phased-out refrigerant, or facing a failed compressor, we will say so rather than sell you an expensive after hours repair on something that has finished. In that situation the useful outcome from the call is a clear answer and a plan, not a bill.
Call 0489 266 523 and describe what the unit is doing.
Where we work
- Babinda The wettest town in the country, where drainage and outdoor unit siting decide how long a system lasts.
- Bentley Park Small blocks and close-set houses, where the outdoor unit location decides the whole system design.
- Edge Hill Heritage Queenslanders with no wall cavity, where the pipe route is the hardest part of the job.
- Edmonton Southern corridor estates where most installs go into new slab-on-ground homes within months of handover.
- Innisfail Rebuild-era housing where the mounting standard is the whole conversation, and rainfall does the rest.
- Gordonvale Cane country, where the thing that quietly costs a system its capacity is what settles on the coil.
- Mission Beach Salt and cyclone exposure together, on properties that often sit empty between guests.
- Redlynch A valley suburb where humidity sits higher than the coast, so sizing for moisture removal matters more than raw output.
- Smithfield Heavy rental turnover near JCU, where reliability between tenants matters as much as the install itself.
- Trinity Beach Direct salt exposure off the water, where coil specification and condenser siting decide how long a system lasts.
- Tully Rainfall and humidity at the extreme end, on blocks where the supply run is often the real constraint.
Tell us what it is doing
Describe the symptom and the unit and you will get an idea of what is going on before anyone comes out.
- Hours
- Weekdays 7 until 5, Saturday mornings
- Area
- Cairns, the beaches, and south to the Cassowary Coast
- Quotes
- In writing, itemised, no obligation
- We ask what the rooms are doing before we quote a size, not after.
- The quote covers the mount, the line set, the electrical and the make good, so there are no line items appearing on install day.
- Written, itemised, and yours to compare against anyone else's.
