Air Conditioning Redlynch
A valley suburb where humidity sits higher than the coast, so sizing for moisture removal matters more than raw output.
Redlynch is a humidity problem before it is a heat problem
Sitting in the valley against the base of the escarpment, Redlynch does not get the breeze that the coastal suburbs do, and it does get the moisture running off the rainforest above it. Overnight the air often stays saturated well after the temperature has dropped. Plenty of houses out here are not uncomfortable because the room is hot. They are uncomfortable because the room is at twenty-four degrees and still damp.
In the trade that is called latent load, the energy spent removing water from the air rather than lowering its temperature. Redlynch carries more of it than almost any suburb in Cairns, and it changes what a correctly sized system looks like.
Why a bigger unit makes it worse
An air conditioner only dehumidifies while the indoor coil is running cold and air is passing over it. A unit that is too large for the room drops the temperature quickly, hits the setpoint and shuts down before it has spent enough time pulling moisture out. The thermostat is satisfied, the compressor stops, and the room stays clammy. Then it starts again a few minutes later. That pattern is short cycling, and in this valley it is the single most common reason someone tells us their system is not working when there is nothing mechanically wrong with it.
The fix is not adjustment. It is specification. We size for the actual room, lean toward the correct capacity rather than the generous one, and favour inverter equipment that will hold a long low-output run instead of thrashing between on and off. Longer run times at lower capacity mean more hours of air across a cold coil, which is what actually dries the room.
Two very different housing stocks in one suburb
Redlynch Valley and the newer estates on the western side are mostly rendered block and modern slab construction with sealed ceilings, current insulation and reasonably predictable heat gain. Ducted becomes viable in a lot of these homes because there is a proper roof void to work in.
Nearer the original village and along the older streets you get timber Queenslanders, some high-set, with ventilated subfloors, louvres and ceiling spaces that were designed to breathe rather than seal. Sealing those houses is not the goal, but you do need to be honest that an open-plan area with louvres at one end will run the system continuously without ever quite getting there. Zoning the treatment to the rooms you actually use is usually a better use of money than trying to condition the whole envelope.
Worth saying: this humidity is also why Redlynch units grow mould faster than coastal ones. A system that smells musty on startup is not a fault, it is a coil and drain tray that needs a proper clean rather than a spray.
