Air Conditioning Bentley Park
Small blocks and close-set houses, where the outdoor unit location decides the whole system design.
The outdoor unit decides the job here
On a typical Bentley Park block the side setback is narrow, the neighbour’s house is close, and there is one wall that will realistically take a condenser. Everything else about the system follows from that. Which rooms can be cooled, whether it is three separate splits or one multi head, and how the pipe runs get concealed are all downstream of a decision about a two square metre patch of ground or wall.
That is the opposite of how most quotes get done. Plenty of people measure the rooms and work out the outdoor side later. In this suburb that sequence produces a quote that cannot be built, or one that can be built badly.
Why multi head comes up so often
Because there is usually only one sensible outdoor location, a multi head system is frequently the honest answer in Bentley Park rather than an upsell. One condenser feeding three or four indoor heads keeps a single set of penetrations, one condensate strategy and one bit of ground taken up, instead of a row of boxes down a side path you still need to walk down.
There is a trade we will always state plainly. Heads on a multi head system share one compressor, so they share its behaviour. Run one small bedroom head overnight and the system is working at the bottom of its range, less efficiently than a dedicated split would, and on some equipment the heads cannot run in opposing modes. If your pattern is genuinely one room at a time, separate splits may serve you better even though they are messier outside. Worth deciding before the quote is written, not after.
Noise, neighbours and the eave line
Houses in these estates sit close enough that a condenser on your wall can be a metre or two from the neighbour’s bedroom window. The unit does not have to be loud to be a problem at that distance, and the complaints that arise are almost always about night operation rather than daytime.
What we look at: the distance and angle to the nearest habitable window on the adjoining property, whether a hard fence or a wall is going to reflect noise back across the boundary, and whether the discharge air has somewhere to go. An outdoor unit crammed into a narrow side passage recirculates its own hot air, which raises head pressure, cuts capacity and makes it run harder and louder for the same result. Give it clearance and it is quieter and more efficient at once.
Eave overhang matters too. A condenser under a generous eave stays out of direct sun and out of the worst of the rain, which is worth real capacity on a February afternoon. Where the eave is shallow, a purpose-made hood beats an improvised one.
Talk it through before install day
