What Drives Air Conditioning Installation Cost in Cairns

The variables that decide a quote, and why a figure given over the phone is a guess.

Why a figure over the phone is a guess

Two houses in the same street, both wanting a head in the main bedroom, can be genuinely different jobs. Same brand, same capacity, same day of the week. What separates them is everything between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit, and none of that is visible from a phone call.

So rather than pretend, here is what a quote is actually made of. If you can work out which of these apply to you, a quote stops feeling arbitrary and starts being something you can compare fairly between installers.

VariableSimple end of the jobExpensive end of the job
Pipe runBack to back through one wallLong run to the far side, vertical rise, extra gas by weight
StoreyGround floor, clear working areaSecond storey, ladders or a platform, staged setup

ElectricalSpare way on a sound switchboardNo spare capacity, board upgrade needed first
Outdoor unitWall bracket at a good height on structureGround stand, bracket reaching structure through fibro, long carry
Make goodShort cover run, easy patchMultiple penetrations, painting, reinstating cabinetry

A condenser unit on steel brackets fixed to an exterior wall
Whether the outdoor unit has a sensible home is one of the largest single variables in a quote

Equipment and capacity

The obvious variable first. Equipment sits in tiers, and the tiers are real rather than marketing. They differ in compressor quality, coil coating options, control and sensor sophistication, sound levels, parts availability years from now and the length and terms of the warranty. A budget unit and a premium unit of identical capacity are not the same purchase.

Capacity is the second half of it. A larger unit costs more to buy and, in the tropics, capacity is not something to guess at, because oversizing costs comfort as well as money. That decision belongs at quote stage.

What the building itself decides

This is where two jobs diverge most.

Pipe run length is the big one. Outdoor units are shipped pre charged with refrigerant for a nominal pipe length, commonly a few metres. Run further than that and refrigerant has to be added by weight, and a long run also carries a capacity penalty and may need an oil trap on a vertical rise. Where the indoor unit sits relative to the outdoor unit therefore matters both technically and commercially.

Storey height and access follow. A back to back install on a ground floor wall with a clear working area outside is the simple end of the trade. Second storey work needs proper access, ladders or a platform, and time to set up safely before anything is drilled. Tight side setbacks, a locked meter box, stairs, a long carry and a unit going up a stairwell all add hours.

Wall construction is the quiet one. Timber frame with a cavity is straightforward. Rendered block, concrete, double brick, or a Queenslander with VJ walls and no cavity all change how the core hole is made and how the pipework is routed and concealed.

Electrical work, make good, and the outdoor unit position

An air conditioner usually needs its own dedicated circuit. Whether your switchboard can accept one, and in what condition it is, sits outside the aircon itself but is very much part of the job. Several heads or a ducted system pushes that further.

Make good is the finishing. Ducting covers, patching, painting, sealing penetrations properly against water and vermin, and reinstating anything moved to get access. It is time, and honest quotes include it.

Finally, whether the outdoor unit has a sensible home. A clear wall at a good height on structure, close to the indoor unit, out of the salt wind, with room to breathe and to service, is the easy case. A unit that has to go on a stand at ground level, on a bracket that has to reach structure through fibro, or around the far side of the house, is not.

How to compare two quotes fairly

Quotes are only comparable when they cover the same work. Before you put two side by side, check that each one states:

  • The indoor and outdoor model numbers, not just a brand and a capacity
  • The pipe run length allowed, and what happens if the actual run is longer
  • Whether the electrical work is included, and whether a switchboard upgrade is assumed or excluded
  • Who patches, seals and paints the penetrations, inside and out
  • Where the outdoor unit is going, and on what
  • The coil coating, if you are anywhere near the water
  • Removal and disposal of the old unit, if there is one
  • The warranty terms on both the equipment and the labour

A quote that is cheaper because it quietly excludes three of those is not cheaper. It is the same job with the difference moved to a variation later.

None of that becomes a number until someone has seen the rooms. Describe them, or read what split system installation in Cairns covers, and we will put the whole job in writing. Call 0489 266 523 if it is easier to talk it through.

Quotes
In writing, itemised, no obligation
  • We ask what the rooms are doing before we quote a size, not after.
  • The quote covers the mount, the line set, the electrical and the make good, so there are no line items appearing on install day.
  • Written, itemised, and yours to compare against anyone else's.
